Sony's Latest PS5 Update includes Discord Voice Chat and VRR Support for 1440p

Sony has officially released a new PlayStation 5 update that includes long-awaited Discord support as well as VRR (variable refresh rate) for 1440p resolutions.

The update was first tested in a beta version last month, which was made available to a select group of users.

Discord

PS5 players can now use voice chat to communicate with friends on other platforms thanks to Discord support. To begin, players must connect their Discord and PlayStation Network accounts via the PS5's settings menu. After linking their accounts, players can begin a conversation by using the Discord mobile app on their smartphone or PC.

This update will be especially helpful for gamers who frequently play cross-platform games, as they can now communicate with their friends on other platforms without needing to use a separate chat app on their mobile devices.

VRR

In addition to Discord support, the new update also brings VRR support for 1440p resolutions. This feature is already available on the PS5 for 4K and 1080p resolutions, but this update now expands VRR support to 1440p.

For the unaware, VRR is a technology that allows a display to dynamically adjust its refresh rate according to the output of the GPU, preventing issues like half-rendered frames and screen tearing. However, to take advantage of VRR, players will need an HDMI 2.1 display, which supports this technology.

Wireless

In addition, the update includes a wireless update feature for the DualSense controller, making it easier to keep the controller up to date without the need to connect it to the console via a cable.

The update

Overall, this update should be a welcome addition for PlayStation 5 players who have been waiting for Discord support and expanded VRR compatibility, and it demonstrates Sony's commitment to listening to what players want to see next.
