GAMESTOP LEAVING GERMANY: ANOTHER BRICK AND MORTAR BITES THE DUST
Ever wondered what happens when a gaming retail giant finally runs out of extra lives? GameStop is about to show us, announcing their permanent departure from Germany by January 31, 2025. The once-mighty retailer is pulling the plug on their remaining 70 stores in the country, marking another major retreat from the European market.
A ROUGH SAVE FILE
GameStop's recent history reads like a failed speedrun attempt. After taking a massive L in 2019 with significant net losses, followed by the COVID pandemic forcing temporary closures, the company's been stumbling harder than a Dark Souls newcomer. They already rage-quit Ireland in 2023, closing all stores and their website faster than you can say "trade-in value."
THE GERMAN SHUTDOWN
The German operation has been shrinking faster than Mario after losing his power-up, dropping from 200 stores to a measly 70. Now those final outposts are getting the axe too. The company's being about as clear with their closure date as game developers are with release dates, just saying it'll happen "as early as January 31, 2025."
WHAT ABOUT THE NPCS?
The human cost? About 500 employees will be joining the job-hunting quest. GameStop's European presence is shrinking faster than their trade-in values, with only France remaining after this exit. Their Italian stores got sold off quicker than a rare Pokemon card, already being rebranded by a third party.
THE DIGITAL DEATH KNELL
Let's face it, physical game stores are becoming as rare as a bug-free Bethesda launch. With digital downloads becoming the norm and internet speeds rivaling Sonic the Hedgehog, brick-and-mortar game shops are looking more obsolete than a PS2 memory card. Even GameStop's pivot to Pokemon cards and collectibles isn't saving them from the digital apocalypse, is it sad? Definitely, but it’s the reality we will have to live with.
