The Wolf Among Us 2 Delayed because of switch to Unreal Engine 5

Telltale Games announced yesterday that the highly anticipated sequel to The Wolf Among Us won’t be released in 2023, as was previously planned.

The primary reason for the delay, according to the developer, was a switch from Unreal Engine 4 to Unreal Engine 5 during development, which has "created quite a bit of work."

High expectations

Telltale CEO Jamie Ottilie revealed to IGN that the team had been working tirelessly to try and still release the game in 2023, but that it was not feasible without sacrificing the game's quality. Ottilie stressed that if they released the game before it was fully polished, they would be "destroyed," as the game has high expectations and they want to meet them as not to disappoint fans.

The wolf among us

The Wolf Among Us is based on the popular Fables comics, which feature characters from fairy tales living in the real world alongside humans. The game's first season, released in 2013 and 2014, was met with critical acclaim and a devoted fan base. The eagerly awaited sequel will be available on the Epic Games Store, PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X and S, and Xbox One.

What the fans think

Fans are understandably disappointed by the delay, but many recognize the importance of ensuring that the game is fully polished before release. Some have expressed concern about the switch to Unreal Engine 5, fearing that it will cause additional delays, bugs, or optimization issues, but Ottilie assured fans that the team is now in a good place with the engine and making great progress.

The wait

While there is no confirmed release date for The Wolf Among Us 2 at this time, fans can rest assured that the delay is ultimately for the benefit of the game.

Until then, they can revisit the first game or dive into the Fables comics for more adventures in the fantastical world of Fabletown.
