Mundfish Apologizes for Racist Caricature featured in Atomic Heart
Mundfish, the developer of Atomic Heart, has apologized for a racist caricature in the game.
The caricature, which appeared on a TV in the game, is from a show called Nu, Pogodi!, which aired in the Soviet Union in 1969 and depicts an African tribesman in a derogatory manner. The developer responded quickly after PCGamer reported the incident earlier this week.
The statement
In their statement, Mundfish thanked PCGamer for bringing the issue to their attention and apologized for any offense caused. and said it will remove the caricature. "The Mundfish team thanks the PC Gamer contributor for bringing this lack of sensitivity to our attention. We apologize if using the vintage cartoon or music has caused hurt or insult. We will edit the parts in question."
Controversy
The incident has added to the controversy surrounding Atomic Heart, which released earlier this week on PC and consoles.
The game, which takes place in an alternate world dominated by a technologically advanced Soviet Union, has been chastised for allegedly being funded by Russian state-owned enterprises. This has raised concerns that game profits could be used to fund Ukraine's ongoing conflict.
Request
The Ukrainian Ministry of Digital Transformation previously stated their intention to write to Sony, Microsoft, and Valve to request that Atomic Heart sales cease in Ukraine. Despite this, the game is still available for purchase in the majority of regions.
