Gothic 1 Remake: How To Open Scatty's Chest
The lockpicking mechanics in the Colony are designed to drive you completely insane, so I mapped out the exact solution to Scatty's lock for you.
If you want to join the Old Camp, Diego tasks you with earning the respect of the local heavy hitters. One of those guys is Fingers. He agrees to give you his vote and teach you how to pick locks, but only if you prove your worth by stealing a ring from Scatty. Yes, the game forces you to pick an incredibly complicated lock just to unlock the lockpicking trainer (which feels like a cruel joke). Before you smash your keyboard in frustration and waste your entire supply of lockpicks, follow my exact sequence to crack the chest open.
Locating The Target
Fingers doesn't make you travel very far to pull this off. Scatty's hut is practically right next door, and tracking it down takes about ten seconds.
Setting Up The Heist
Walk down the slope from where Fingers is standing and take an immediate right. You'll know you're looking at the right building because it has a long red banner hanging to the left of the door. You'll also spot an assortment of weapons displayed on the outside wall and a noticeboard out front. The chest itself is sitting straight ahead in the corner the moment you walk inside the hut.
Don't try to sneak in here at night while Scatty is sleeping. He runs the local arena, which means he leaves his house entirely empty during the daylight hours. That's your window to strike. Also, make absolutely sure that Mud is not following you around. Having that idiot trailing behind you is a guaranteed way to get caught and beaten to death, and surviving the opening hours is hard enough even if you follow my beginner survival tips. Finally, save your game manually right before you touch the chest so you can quickly reload if things go sideways.
The Exact Tumbler Sequence
If you're attempting this without any formal lockpicking training, the minigame is incredibly unforgiving. Moving a plate in the wrong direction instantly snaps your pick.
The lock has five distinct plates or tumblers, numbered one through five from front to back. Here is the precise sequence of movements you need to input to pop the lid open.
Collecting Your Reward
Once the lock finally clicks open, you get to completely clean out Scatty's savings and reap the rewards of your hard work.
The main prize inside the chest is obviously Scatty's Ring. You can technically sell it for some quick cash if you don't care about the Old Camp factions, but taking it back to Fingers is definitely the smart play. Handing it over officially completes the A Ring for Fingers quest, nets you 100 XP, and secures his valuable support for your admission. You also walk away with 16 Ore Nuggets, four wheels of cheese, two loaves of bread, a junk pan, a junk razor, and a spare Pickaxe just in case you want to go mine some loose ore later.
