PlayStation 5 Shipments Hit Record 38.4 Million, Sony Celebrates Best Fourth Quarter Ever
Sony has released its financial results for the fiscal quarter that ended March 31st, and the figures are certainly cause for celebration. As of April 1st, 38.4 million PlayStation 5 consoles had been shipped to retailers and consumers worldwide. 6.3 million PS5 units were shipped in the last quarter alone, up from 4.3 million in the same quarter last year. This impressive figure, regardless of the company, establishes a new record for the number of consoles shipped during the fourth fiscal quarter.
money
Sony's PlayStation division reported a quarterly revenue of 1,073.2 billion yen, or approximately 7.4 billion euros. This represents a significant increase of 61.32% over last year's total of 5.21 billion euros, making this PlayStation's best fourth quarter ever. Operating profit, on the other hand, fell 55% from the previous year to 267 million euros. Sony attributes this drop primarily to the costs of acquiring Bungie.
announcement
The announcement also included 108 million monthly active PlayStation Network users and 47.4 million PlayStation Plus members, both of which have remained stable since last year. In terms of game sales, 68 million copies of PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4 games were sold in the three months preceding April 1st. This is a slight decrease from the previous fiscal year's 70.5 million copies sold during the same period.
future
In the coming fiscal year, which runs from April 1, 2023 to March 31, 2024, Sony plans to ship an ambitious 25 million PlayStation 5 consoles to stores. If successful, this would set a new record for PlayStation consoles, further cementing Sony's dominance in the gaming industry.
