Perfect Dark: Is it a Remake or a Reboot? LinkedIn profile sparks debate

Since its announcement back in 2020, the upcoming Perfect Dark game has been the subject of much speculation, and a recent comment from one of the developers has added fuel to the fire. Tyler Thornock, The Initiative's principal technical director, has referred to the game as a "remake" on his LinkedIn profile.

reboot or remake?

This differs from the game's previous description as a "reboot," which implied that it would be a fresh start for the franchise, with no canon ties to previous games. Thornock could simply have used the incorrect terminology, but it could also indicate that the new game will revisit events from the prior games.

the past

The first Perfect Dark game was released in 2000 as the spiritual successor to the successful James Bond shooter GoldenEye 007. It was created by Rare for the Nintendo 64 and was later acquired by Microsoft. Perfect Dark Zero, a prequel, was released alongside the Xbox 360, but the franchise hasn't really seen any activity since then, aside from a re-release of the original game on Xbox 360.

no info

Perfect Dark is being developed by Microsoft studio The Initiative in collaboration with Crystal Dynamics. Very little known about the game so far, as no gameplay has been revealed, but it has been confirmed that it will be released on Xbox Series X and S, as well as PC.

boundaries

Whether the new Perfect Dark is actually a remake or a reboot, fans of the franchise are eagerly anticipating its release. With the involvement of Crystal Dynamics, the game promises to push the boundaries of storytelling and gameplay, and there is optimism that it will live up to the legacy of the original games.
