EA CEO Wilson "thrilled" with Star Wars Jedi: Survivor sales, but gamers frustrated with technical issues

EA CEO Andrew Wilson recently discussed the performance of Star Wars Jedi: Survivor, an action-adventure game released on April 28 for the PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X and S, and PC. Wilson claims that the game has already sold millions of copies, far exceeding the company's expectations.

"We made the brave decision to postpone the title for six weeks to give the team a chance to achieve the quality they desired," Wilson said in an interview with VGC about the fourth quarter figures. "We are overjoyed with Jedi. Millions of players joined Cal Kestis and BD1's resistance against the Empire during the first few weeks."

A mixed bag

Many gamers, however, are complaining about technical issues and bugs in the game, particularly on the PC version. Despite this, Wilson stated that the game's sales are far exceeding expectations. "It's definitely been a strong release for us," he explained. "It's still early, only 11 days, and we're in a different market dynamic, but I can tell you that it's doing very well in comparison to our expectations and to Jedi: Fallen Order."

While the game has been praised for its high-quality graphics and immersive gameplay, many players have been disappointed by its performance issues. Respawn, the developer, has already released several patches in a short period of time, but the bugs and technical issues remain.

Mixed reactions

The game's mixed reception is reflected in the user reviews on Steam, which are overwhelmingly negative, with many players blaming technical issues and bugs for their annoyance. Due to a game bug, one player even reported losing their pre-order bonus, the Hermit lightsaber components.

The game's success, on the other hand, is unquestionably good news for EA, which has previously faced criticism for its handling of the Star Wars franchise. After the controversial release of Star Wars Battlefront II in 2017, which was criticized for its aggressive microtransactions, the company has been working to rebuild its reputation.

Looking ahead

Despite the technical issues, Star Wars Jedi: Survivor appears to have made a strong sales start. With reports of a Metal Gear Solid 3 remake and other exclusive deals with Konami, Sony, and Capcom, the gaming industry appears to have a lot to look forward to in the coming months.
